Breed Standard

The WBBA Breed Standard is a written criterion which describes the ideal Boerboel. Members shall breed for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed.

Our Principles

  • The health and welfare of the dogs is our primary focus.
  • WBBA will take the necessary action to ensure the continuation and preservation of purebred Boerboels.
  • WBBA provides tools to assist breeders to breed healthier and fit for function dogs.
  • WBBA and our members abide by and promote compliance with the law and represent the highest ethical standards in our conduct.
  • WBBA and our members will act with honesty, without bias and fairly in all our dealings with other people and other breeders.

Code of Ethics

  • At all times and above all other considerations my primary focus will be on what is best for the health and welfare of my dogs.
  • In all my dealings, I will be straightforward, honest and truthful. I will not knowingly pass on information that contains materially false or misleading statements or which are misleading by omission.
  • I will comply with WBBA Codes of Ethics, Rules and all relevant legal and welfare requirements for my locality when keeping dogs, breeding dogs or selling a dog/puppy.
  • I will not use the WBBA logo, WBBA member status or number to advertise or promote any animal that cannot be registered with WBBA.
  • I will do nothing which will bring WBBA into disrepute.
  • I will properly house, feed, water and exercise all dogs under my care and arrange for appropriate veterinary attention if, and when required.
  • I will only sell dogs to properly vetted owners, where there is a reasonable expectation of a happy and healthy life and, will help with the rehoming of a dog if the initial circumstances change.
  • I will provide information on the proper upbringing and care of Boerboels, including not to spay or neuter before at least 12 months of age (preferably older).
  • I will supply written details of all dietary requirements and give guidance concerning responsible ownership when placing dogs in a new home.
  • I will not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers or directly or indirectly allow dogs to be given as a prize or donation in a competition of any kind.
  • I will not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed nor falsely advertise dogs nor mislead any person regarding the health or quality of a dog.

Rules

  • Members will not allow any dogs under their care to roam at large and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed, or under effective control, at all times.
  • Members will ensure that dogs are not kept in such a way that it may promote aggression amongst the dogs. Boerboels are a strong dominant breed and proper care should be taken to limit interactions that could result in aggression.
  • Bitches must not be bred before they are at least 12 months of age and not on the first season. A bitch should only be bred when she is in good health.
  • Studs must not be bred before they are at least 12 months of age.
  • Closely related dogs must not be bred: parents to children, siblings and half sibling, aunts and uncles to nieces and nephews, without WBBA approval (approval will be given to breeders with a clear breeding plan and knowledge of their lines and dogs).
  • Breeders will avoid breeding for colour only, dogs with a recessive colour should not be bred to a dog with the same recessive colour unless the result will improve the breed with regard to temperament, conformation, health or genetic diversity.
  • Members will provide written details of all dietary, microchipping and immunization requirements and/or an appropriate guide relating to such requirements and responsible dog ownership to all buyers. Including information on spaying/neutering.
  • Members shall not sell any puppy under eight weeks of age.

Actions

  • WBBA is committed to the health and long-term fitness of the breed and breeders should feel encouraged to promote the importance of health testing to other breeders on social media, as well as providing feedback on how to help their dogs live the longest, happiest life possible, even if they are afflicted with breed common conditions, such as hip and elbow dysplasia.
  • Any breeder found to be posting content that depicts abuse of any animal may have their membership revoked, pending investigation by WBBA Quality Assurance.
  • Any breeder publicly promoting the cross breeding of Boerboels, may have their membership revoked, pending investigation by WBBA Quality Assurance.
